Cards can be use to sound out regular words. Write out three-letter words with separate letters on a small piece of card and keep them in a handy place. When a child knows the single sound, they can move on to pairs of the sound, e.g. "gr" for "grip," "fl" for "flap" and so on by putting the cards of single letters together.

The next step is to teach "th," "sh" and "ck." Then go on to pairs of vowels which make a new sound together, e.g. oo, ee, ea, ou, oi, ai, ow and oa. If he can read 10 of these cards for each day, he deserves a small reward!

The skill that a child has to learn is to smoothly blend each letter into the next sound, e.g. "t-a" for "tap." It helps if the letter sounds are said in a short clipped way, saying the "t" sound as a brief sound and trying not to lengthen it into "tuh."
