Baseball is played on a diamond with lines drawn at specific angles, and bases placed 90 feet apart. Home plate and the pitcher's mound are 60 feet and six inches apart. Equipment needed for a baseball game is simple—a hardwood or metal bat, a glove for each player, a ball and a mask and pads for the catcher.

Each team has nine players on the field during a game. While the members of one team take their turns at bat and attempt to score, their opponents are in the field to prevent them from scoring. The players in the field include the battery, the infield and the outfield. The battery consists of the pitcher, who must have one foot on the pitcher’s plate when throwing the ball toward the batter, and the catcher, who must wait for the pitched ball within the triangle behind home plate. The other players may be anywhere within the foul lines, but their usual positions are indicted in the diagram. The infielders are the first basemen, second basemen, third basement and shortstop. The outfielders are the right, center and left fielders.
